PUPPY’S PRAYER Lord, thank you for giving me life, a good mother, litter brothers and sisters; we’ve had many happy times together. Now that it is time for a new home, please give my new master much understanding. Since I can’t speak to let my needs known, a warm bed, regular feeding, love, and an occasional visit to the vet office, are a must if I am to be healthy; without health you cannot give your best, and in return I shall give undying love in full measure. As a youngster, I will be out of one mischief into another, but soon this will pass; then a few years of companionship with you. Be sure my playground is fenced, for your canine friend has a way of forgetting while at play, dashing suddenly across the street without looking; a car can be deadly with man’s best friend. All too soon comes the slowing down passage, hearing not so good, eyesight dimmed. Now is the time for my master to remember the frisky puppy of not so long ago, also the good years we’ve had together, and if you can’t stand me growing old, then let the vet put me to sleep. But Don’t! Oh God, let my master’s heart harden and place me out in the backyard to sleep, when I have been used to staying indoors, because I’m making mistakes. Or worse, place me out for adoption in a strange place to die, alone away from the ones I love. Around my eighth year, the sun is setting and as twilight brings the night, let my master’s face be near. To you prospective master, please, please do not buy me if you cannot cope with inconveniences. A prayer to God and my new master. Your loving puppy |
